We played host to Mastergeeha last weekend in another U14 league fixture. We went into the game on the back of a good performance in our last match and despite losing to a heartbreaking last minute goal we continue to improve. Mastergeeha lost narrowly in their previous game and were favourites before the game. In the first phase of the game we played well and looked comfortable in possession. Our back 5 of Oisin , Dara , Antoin, Fionán and Chris were doing very well and made themselves available for the ball when required. In midfield we had good possession with Jack and Eoghan in the engine room and PJ McCarthy and Sean Donnellan flying on the wings. The Mastergeeha midfield and defence were quite resolute so our front 2 of Sean Higgins and Thomas had to come deep at times to get possession resulting in quite a lot of the game in the middle of the pitch. We lost Sean through injury after 15 minutes but Cormac was an able replacement. The game ebbed and flowed with both teams pressing their opponents defence but without much in the way of clear cut chances. In the second half the game opened up a bit with our midfield losing shape a bit in the middle. Consequently Mastergeeha had a bit more possession here, setting up their wingers whose quality of crossing was of a high quality and Oisin with his defence had to be vigilant to keep them at bay. At the other end though we were able to get at their defence and in contrast to our opponents we tried to play through them and it took some good defending to keep us out.Our play sometimes was very good and when we get it down and pass we are at our best. Thomas gave us a glimpse of his trickery with 15 left and beat 3 defenders in their box but somehow their keeper kept the ball out. With time up we were deemed to have handled the ball just outside the box and a good free kick ended up in the net to leave the final score 1 nil to Mastergeeha. Well done to both teams. Even though there was only 1 goal scored it was a game of a good quality and it was pleasing to see our lads play with intensity from start to finish with no let up.
