Mixed Weekend for Seniors

Our senior team had a mixed weekend, playing on Saturday and Monday evenings to try and catch up on the backlog of games following the recent bad weather. On Saturday evening we played Killarney Athletic in Mounthawk Park and ran out 1-0 winners, although it should have been more. We were dominant from the off and created several chances with Sean Ryan, Bill Mullins and Sean Foley causing all sorts of problems for our opponents. Athletic didn’t pose much of a threat but Barry Galvin was very quick off his line on a few occasions to snuff out any danger. We created plenty of chances throughout the first half but couldn’t convert any. The winning goal came in the second half when Sean Ryan headed home from Chick’s corner. We closed out the game from here but, considering how many chances we had, should have scored more during the game.

Monday evening’s game was a different story altogether as we slumped to our first league defeat of the season against Park. From the start it was clear our opponents were up for it as they aggressively pressed us high up the pitch. Playing against a very strong wind we were pinned into our half for the opening exchanges and our opponents took the lead early on when they finished from close range. We lost a couple of players to injury during the first half as we went looking for an equaliser. Unfortunately, Park grabbed their second when they were awarded a penalty which they converted. Two then became three when a ball over the top fell to a Park player and they finished to the net. We had been getting some joy when we pressed our opponents in midfield and created a few half chances but didn’t convert. Shortly before half time we grabbed a lifeline when Sean Ryan once again headed home from close range. The second half was a different story altogether as we put the pressure on our opponents. Daniel Clinton pulled another goal back for us when he finished from the penalty spot. This spurred us on as we went looking for the equaliser. We came close late on in the game when Darren Lynch headed against the crossbar but we couldn’t get a third goal.
