Seniors Need Penalties to Advance in FAI Junior Cup

FAI Junior Cup

Fenit Samphires-2

Sean Allen (2)

Camp United-2

Our seniors scraped through to the next round of the FAI Junior Cup with penalties needed to dispatch a resolute Camp United team. Having played out a 5-1 win two weeks ago we could be forgiven for having a lot of confidence going into the game but it was a much different Camp team that turned up this time. We did have most of the possession from the off with Peter and Dano getting on the ball in midfield, with Ger and Ryan pushing on up front. Once again Camp were flying in with tackles all over the pitch, keeping referee Derek O Shea busy throughout the game. Much of our good play came from out wide with Sean Allen and Bill Mullins getting some joy away from the packed middle of the pitch. The visitors were very direct when they attacked and looked like they would take the lead from a corner only for David O Sullivan to pull off a wonderful save in goals. We took the lead late in the half when Klaudio whipped a great cross in and Sean rose highest to send a bullet header to the net.

The second half started as the first finished as we were seeing a lot of the ball but not creating many chances. Sean scored our second early in the half when he finished brilliantly after finding himself 1-on-1 with the keeper. In truth we should have closed the game out from this position but Camp piled the pressure on as they looked for a way back into the game. Klaudio, Darren, Ruairi and Rob were working hard at the back to deal with the direct approach from the visitors. Camp pulled a goal back when they finished after the ball bounced around the goals following a corner. We just couldn’t seem to keep the ball as well as we should have in this position, allowing the visitors to launch more attacks. They eventually got the equaliser when a ball over the top wasn’t dealt with and their striker finished to the net. Extra time beckoned.

Both periods of extra time saw few chances created by both sides as both defences stayed tight. Penalties would be required. We changed our keeper for the shootout with Ger going between the sticks. Thankfully we won through in the end with Oisin, Peter, Dano, Ger and Klaudio all scoring from the spot.
