Seniors Too Strong For Asdee

Greyhound Bar KO Cup – First Round

Fenit Samphires- 2

Peter McCarthy, Bill Mullins

Asdee Rovers- 1

Our senior team scraped through to the second round of the Greyhound Bar KO Cup with a hard fought win over Asdee on Sunday morning. We have struggled to play with some fluidity and confidence lately and we seem to be getting these back into our play in recent games. As usual we got the ball down early on with Peter McCarthy and Klaudio Dema in central midfield dictating play and linking well with Ray Walsh and Tadgh Fleming on the wings. Asdee were happy enough to sit back and knock the ball long which did put us under some pressure throughout the game. Our back four of Sean Allen, John Maher, Ruairi Kelly and John Moran were dealing with this pressure quite well and the visitors were restricted to a couple of long range efforts. The visitors took the lead midway through the half when they beat Darren Lynch in goals with a decent free kick- the first goal we have conceded at home this season! We kept our cool after this and continued to play good football with Ger McCarthy and Daniel Clinton causing problems for the Asdee back line. Peter grabbed the equaliser when he curled a superb free kick around the wall and into the bottom corner. Although we had chances to add to this we couldn’t convert and it was 1-1 at half time.

A couple of changes were made at half time with Klaudio going in goals with Darren slotting in at the back and Ruairi pushed into midfield. The second period saw us dominate completely as we showed great patience as we probed for openings. Sean Foley and Bill Mullins were sprung from the bench during the half and they gave us a boost with some good direct running. It was Bill who grabbed the winner when he latched onto a wonderful through ball to volley home. The visitors didn’t give in and kept the pressure on but we dealt with it quite well and never really looked like conceding as we closed the game out.

We play Tralee Athletic at home in the next round.
