Higgins Hat Trick Helps 17s To Victory

Our 17s team played Asdee in the league last weekend at home in Fenit. The conditions were blustery with a strong enough north westerly blowing diagonally across the pitch. We played with the aid of this wind in the first half but didn’t start well. We conceded after 5 minutes when a through ball held up perfectly for the onrushing Asdee centre forward to score. This proved to be a wake up call and we dominated the rest of the half. We kept the ball well and switched the ball judiciously to good effect but narrow misses, good defending in general and good goalkeeping in particular kept us out for a while. Eventually the pressure told and we scored through Sean Higgins who pounced on a loose ball in the box. Alan McElligott and Bobby O Regan were bossing the midfield at this stage ably helped by Christopher Murphy on the right wing. Oisin O’Brien on one of his slalom runs on the left was taken out in the box soon after and Bobby  converted for number 2. Sean doubled his tally on 35 minutes for 3 after some quick play from Thomas Lenihan and Oisin got his first of the day for 4-1 at the half.  The 3rd quarter belonged to Asdee as our performance fell away against the wind and maybe it was in the players’ heads this match was over. We endured a period of pressure as our opponents kept us in our own half. Our quality of passing was now letting us down and we were losing possession near our own box far too often. We did well not to concede for 20 minutes with our back 5 of Brian O’Regan in goals , Antoin Stanton, Ciaran Carmody, Jack McCarthy and Cormac O Brien defending well. Jack and Antoin in particular both had very good games. Eventually we gave away a penalty for a handball in the box after a 4th corner in a row which was duly dispatched. We put on Dara O’Connor, John Dillane (both coming back from injury) and Conor Lowe for the last half an hour and the game evened up again.  We were dangerous on the counter and scored 2 more through Sean (for his hat trick) and Oisin to leave it 6-2. We move now into 2nd in the table with 4 games left to play. Finally well done and thanks to everyone who helped out on the day.
