U17s Start Season With Victory

SeanD_COB_SHOur U17 team started their season with a good win last weekend. The weather was blustery with one or 2 heavy downpours in the second half but in the main it was a good day for a game. Killorglin provided the opposition and despite the scoreline the game was a good contest. We started on the up and controlled the first 15 minutes culminating in a fantastic solo effort by left back Cormac O Brien who took the ball from his own half right to edge of their box and finishing off the run with a shot into the bottom right hand corner of the net. Our midfield of Bobby O Regan ,Thomas Lenihan, Oisin O Brien and John Dillane were in control for the most part and soon it was 2 when Darren Chester at right back played in John on the right wing who crossed first time to the near post. Sean Higgins was the first to react and attacked the near post and drew the keeper. Neither got the ball which squirted across the goal to the onrushing Oisin who finished. We came under pressure for the remainder of the half but a strong performance by the back 5 of Brian O’Regan, Darren Chester, Antoin Stanton, Sean Donnellan and Cormac didn’t yield. 2nd Half – We continued on the same vein this half and had more of the play while being mindful of the threat posed by the counter attacking Killorglin side with 2 or 3 strong runners who threatened at times. Our front 2 of Christopher Murphy and Sean had quite a battle with the 2 opposing centre backs. While they rarely got in behind them our 2 lads set up quite a lot of play for our midfield who constantly probed down both flanks leading to many good chances. We finally scored our 4th through Bobby after some good combination play with Thomas, Chris and Sean. We introduced U16s David Lenihan, Ciaran Carmody and Alan McEliggott in the second half. David linked very well on the right with his brother Thomas and the 2 front players. Ciaran played at right back and is developing strength to add to his skill. Great to see Alan back as well and he too got us out of a few holes late on in the game with his quick and incisive passing. Well done to all on the day – keep it up.
