U17s Courageous In Defeat

With our U13s playing out an 8 goal thriller last Saturday morning you’d never expect another high scoring match in the afternoon but that was exactly what we got.Unfortunately we lost out here again 5-2 after a herculean effort by our lads at home to Park ‘A’. We started out on the up and scored after 5 minutes through Cian MacGarry who ran miles for us throughout but amazingly it was ruled out. The game was really fast by any standard and after 70 minutes we tired. The Park are champions at this age group, almost all of their players play with the county team and play with a high tempo. We were in the division below our opponents for the last few seasons and the new pace of the game told in the end but a superb game for us. We can see that with the right application we will perform at this level. After 20 minutes we lost possession just outside our box and after some clever interplay the Park scored. 10 minutes later we were caught on the counter with a clinical finish after some good approach play. We were not deterred though, created a number of shooting chances and eventually Sean Higgins worked some magic on the wing and unleashed an unstoppable shot across the keeper to make it 2-1. Our defence of Jamie Hogan,Padraig O’Connor,Antoin Stanton and David Murphy were quite solid throughout and conceded little space. Our midfield defended as a unit and played some fabulous football.Thomas Dwyer dovetailed well with Jamie on the left and Sean was quite a thorn at times on the right. Thomas had one of his best ever games in the middle and David Egan gave an outstanding display of midfield play. With Bobby O’Regan and Cian up front we always had a threat. 2 – 1 at the half. The 2nd half continued at a reckless pace and the both sets of supporters were enthralled. The Park began to take control midway through the half and as we tired, we struggled to keep them away from our box and it was only a matter of time before they got their 3rd and it was tiredness as much as anything else that caught us. We tried manfully for the rest of the game to find a way back and had a double attack with 12 minutes to go to score but the Park defence somehow kept us out. At this point Oisin O’Brien and Cormac O’Brien were centre backs for us and proved a good pairing which bodes well for us in the future. In the last 10 minutes the Park got 2 more goals and Eoghan converted a penalty for us after Thomas was fouled.Well done to our lads on a very creditable performance.
