U16s Hold Out Bravely For A Draw

Our U16 team got a 2 – 2 draw at home to Killorglin last weekend in another dramatic match in Fenit in the county Division 1  division.  This was most definitely a game of 2 halves and a draw was probably the fairest result. Jack McCarthy once again stood between the sticks for the injured Eoghan O’Brien and was assured all through. Jack was very much missed out the field in the second half when we lacked a bit of bite in the middle but we hope Eoghan will be back in goal soon. We bossed the game for the first half and a score of only 2-1 at the half time whistle was scant return for our dominance. Both goals were from the boot of Sean Higgins on the right who popped up in the right place at the right time after some excellent build up play from his team mates around him. Cian MacGarry up front played despite a flu and he was always a threat until he was forced off at the half. Thomas Dwyer and Sean on the wings had the beating of their men and combined well with the central men of Bobby O’Regan, David Murphy and David Egan all through the first half.  We were quite creative during this period and had our opponents under pressure for long periods but somehow we only scored twice. At the stroke of half time we conceded a sucker punch of a goal on the break that gave Killorglin a lifeline. 2nd Half – what a turnaround this was to be. Where we were masters earlier we were now pushed very much back into our own half for the second period. Having lost Cian at half time and then David Murphy early in the second half we were much less of a threat and the physically bigger Killorglin made it count. This was the time for players to be counted and great credit to our lads they gave their very best and almost came away with a victory. Our full backs in this half of Padraig O’Connor and Jamie Hogan rarely let anyone past them on the wings and centre players of Jimmy Shanahan, Antoin Stanton and later Paul Nolan repelled whatever came their way high or low through the middle. David Egan in front of them covered miles for the cause and made tackles and interceptions too numerous to mention. Thomas Lenihan was introduced early in this half and was his usual busy self and was involved in most of our counter attacks with Bobby and the tireless Louis Ryle who replaced Cian earlier. Luke Dalton came on up front with15 to go for Sean Higgins who suffered a calf strain and he stopped their centre backs from launching attacks. With 7 or 8 minutes we thought we had at last weathered the fierce storm and had a few of our own and twice we nearly made it 3 but for some fine saves by their keeper. In the third minute of injury time Killorglin forced another corner and scored with the last kick of the game after a goalmouth melee. But a super game and great spirit by the Samphires – well done to all our lads for a great display.
