Under 16s Through To Next Round Of Tucker Kelly Cup

Last Monday we came up against Killorglin B in the Kerry Under 16 Cup (The Tucker Kelly Cup). We ended up winning 4 nil after a doggedĀ  encounter on a soft pitch. We didn’t play a lot of football in the first half resulting in a lot of players trying to carry the ball through their opponents instead of letting the ball do the work. David Murphy scored for the second game running when he finished unmarked from a corner after 15 minutes. While our team expended a lot of energy in pursuit of a second, we didn’t play with our heads and so didn’t create any clearcut chances in the first 35 minutes – our efforts in the main were from individual efforts from distance and from acute angles none of which were successful. With 10 minutes to go in the half we were caught at the back and nearly conceded an equaliser but their shot went narrowly wide. After this fright we movd up a gear and got to passing the ball. In the last 5 minutes before the half we attacked down the right through Padraig O’Connor after some clever switches of play by David Egan,David Murphy and Jack Kelliher. Padraig drove down the right and put in some smashing crosses but we failed to finish. 2nd Half-We played with more composureĀ  in the second half and had more of the play against a spirited Killorglin team. Eoghan O’Brien in goals didn’t have a huge amount to do but when called upon the Kerry keeper did the necessary. Thomas Dwyer down the left(who we had to move to left back after Jamie Hogan pulled up in the warm-up) and Frosty Ronan on the right both were very good defensively all through and as the game unfolded contributed hugely in attack. New centre back pairing of Jack Kelliher and Paul Nolan have been getting used to each other and look quite solid.David Murphy and David Egan in the middle of the pitch as usual gave us a good hold in the game and both scored. Louis Ryle’s huge work rate is a thorn for any side and he was dangerous all through and scored again at the end for our 4th. Sean Higgins was always a threat with his pace and ball control when we got him on the ball. Cian MacGarry played a different role for us in this match and was the fulcrum of many of our attacks. Unfortunately he got injured and we introduced Bobby O’Regan who brought great quality to our team. His control is top notch and if he gets room he will use the ball well, scoring our third as an example. Others to contribute were Jimmy Shanahan with his strong running and Antoin Stanton who played well in a defensive midfield role for the last 20 minutes when he replaced the injured David Murphy.
