Super Burrowes Header Seals Victory

We were away to Camp in another league game in the IT Tralee all weather pitch on Saturday Feb 4th. It was a dull day but the game itself was anything but dull. It was not one of our better performances on the college’s artificial surface. Our lads were not used to it where you need a sure touch and if you didn’t kill the ball dead on the first touch you were in trouble especially as Camp weren’t in a mood to let us do as we pleased. From the off both teams went at each other. Results between these 2 teams have pretty much been even over the last few years and this game was another close affair. Camp started a bit quicker than us and we were not getting to grips in the middle of the pitch where we missd Jimmy Shanahan who unfortunately had an injury. Camp played a bit more directly than us and had players that were looking to get behind us at all times and we had to be on our guard. Eventually a  Camp shot from outside the box flew into the top corner where Eoghan could do nothing about it. As the half wore on we got more used to the pitch, we started to pass the ball a bit better and we created a number of chances. Cian was dangerous on the break but we were forcing the passes and many ran wide on the smooth surface. When we were a little patient and to use a phrase from rugby when we went through a few phases of passing we forced the chances. Eventually Jack Mac played Cian in down the right wing he crossed perfectly for David Egan who tapped in the equaliser. Ryan, Antoin, Jack and Padraig were on top in midfield for this phase of the game and we had 3 chances through Ryan, Cian and David again all of which went narrowly wide but Cian eventually made the pressure pay with 3 minutes to half time. We stretched our lead again after Padraig and Jamie built from the back and played through Antoin and Ryan. It went from there into their box and after a number of goalmouth scrambles we scored through David Egan.  Unbelievably in the last minute of the half  from a kick out, none of our players dealt with it and again we conceded a very poor goal. 2nd Half – We started the second half again a little slowly and for the first 10 minutes we were under the cosh but at the back with Jamie getting to grips with their dangerous right winger(literally at times!), Bobby cool as a cucumber, Johnno covering his comrades when he wasn’t making the tackles and David starting attack after attack we grew into the game. Eoghan’s controlling of his back 4 is improving game on game and his handling was superb today. We introduced Sean Higgins on the wing and Thomas in midfield and both were key figures in this half. Cian scored a brilliant header from a tremendous corner from Ryan after clever play involving Thomas, Sean and David Murphy and with 4 minutes it looked that we would win but when one of their players fell over the ball in our box the ref actually gave a penalty much to the amusement of those watching, which was converted. Our lads responded immediately and it was great to see them in full flight. We forced a series of attacks and shots but Camp threw themselves at everything to keep us out and their keeper was excellent. Finally we scored on about the 4th attempt in one unbelievable attack after both Davids and Thomas were denied by some brave blocks from the Camp team but when Sean rounded their defender and crossed to supersub Gordon, he leapt like a salmon and scored another of his late late goals with a superb header. Cian put the icing on the cake when he burst through to make it 5-3 with the last kick. We done again to our lads this and thank you to Camp for a sporting game. Finally thank you to all the parents who helped out today and who supported us.
